On Fire Mission

As Christians, our faith is not just about Sunday mornings, or even about the local church we are a part of. Many of us nourished by conferences, groups and places of pilgrimage, such as Greenbelt, the Mothers Union, Taize or Walsingham, all of which have been supported by members of All Saints.

For me a particular place of spiritual support and renewal has been On Fire Mission. In their own words, “On Fire Mission is a network, rooted in the Church of England but open to all, which is dedicated to promoting Charismatic renewal blended with the riches of Catholic spirituality.” On Fire has its roots in the Charismatic Renewal at Walsingham in the 1970’s and warmly welcomes the ministry of ordained women and men. An annual conference is held at High Leigh in Herts in April (18th to the 21st next year) and regional events are held throughout the year.

What is On Fire like?

The worship is not too different to that at All Saints, a rich liturgy - although not too fussy: the use of incense and oil and centred in the Eucharist. There are normally a few more modern songs, a few more hands raised in the air, and space is given for people to share what God is speaking to them after communion – rather like as we did throughout the service on Trinity Sunday this year. God does meet with people in powerful ways, but time is also made for quiet and reflection.

And yes there are flags!

Having had some less than positive experiences of Charismatic spirituality in my 20’s, discovering On Fire was very healing. On Fire brings people together from different expressions of church – it represents the best of the Christian faith, in inclusivity, sign and Spirit, just as we aim to at All Saints.

This November there is a taster day, which a car full of us attended last year. It is on Saturday the 14th of November in Warwick, which is an hour and a half a way. I will be going, as I am involved in offering prayer ministry and I warmly encourage others to attend. Last year there was a full children’s programme too – I will keep you posted!

If you cannot make the trip to On Fire there are still plenty of opportunities for renewal closer to home. The Alpha course is not just for those exploring the Christian faith but is a place where God strengthens those who have been Christians for many years. On Saturday the 10th of October, we will be having our Holy Spirit day - a particular space to meet with God afresh. Please sign up as soon as possible!

Finally a thank you to the members of our pastoral team who have been making themselves available for prayer after the service. I know a number of folks have taken advantage of the opportunity for prayer (including me).

With much love,

Fr. Eddie
